Impetigo Treatment in Basildon, Essex

Impetigo is a highly contagious skin infection that requires prompt treatment to prevent it spreading — to other people and to other parts of your own body. At Whitmore Pharmacy in Basildon, our pharmacists can assess and treat impetigo under the NHS Pharmacy First scheme without you needing to see a GP.

What is Impetigo?

Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes. It most commonly affects young children but can occur at any age. It spreads easily through direct contact with infected skin or sharing towels, clothing, and bedding.

Symptoms of Impetigo

There are two main types:

Non-bullous Impetigo (most common)

  • Red sores around the nose and mouth
  • Sores that quickly burst and leave a golden-yellow crust
  • Sores may be itchy but are not usually painful

Bullous Impetigo

  • Fluid-filled blisters on the trunk, arms, and legs
  • Blisters burst and leave a thin, yellow-brown crust
  • May be accompanied by a fever

How We Treat Impetigo

Treatment depends on the extent of the infection:

  • Localised impetigo: Topical antibiotic cream such as fusidic acid or hydrogen peroxide cream
  • Widespread impetigo: Oral antibiotics such as flucloxacillin or erythromycin

Our pharmacist will assess your case and prescribe the most appropriate treatment through Pharmacy First.

Prevention and Hygiene Advice

  • Wash affected areas gently with soap and warm water
  • Cover sores with loose gauze or clothing
  • Avoid scratching or touching the sores
  • Wash hands frequently, especially before and after touching the sores
  • Do not share towels, bedding, or clothing until the infection has cleared
  • Keep children off school until the sores have healed or 48 hours after starting antibiotics

Frequently Asked Questions

With appropriate antibiotic treatment, impetigo usually clears within 7 to 10 days. Without treatment, it can spread and take longer to resolve.

Impetigo is rarely serious in otherwise healthy people. However, in rare cases it can lead to a deeper skin infection (cellulitis) or kidney problems. Seek urgent care if the skin becomes very painful, swollen, or hot.
