Earache Assessment and Treatment in Basildon, Essex

Earache in children can be distressing for both the child and the parent. At Whitmore Pharmacy, our pharmacists can assess ear pain in children aged 1 to 17 under the NHS Pharmacy First scheme and provide appropriate treatment without the need for a GP appointment.

What Causes Earache?

Earache in children is most commonly caused by a middle ear infection (otitis media). It can also be caused by:

  • Outer ear infections (swimmer’s ear)
  • Earwax build-up
  • A foreign object in the ear
  • Throat infections that refer pain to the ear
  • Dental pain

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Pain in one or both ears
  • Tugging or pulling at the ear (in young children)
  • Difficulty hearing or muffled hearing
  • Discharge from the ear
  • Fever
  • Irritability or crying in young children
  • Balance problems

How We Treat Earache at Whitmore Pharmacy

Our pharmacist will assess the severity and likely cause of the earache. For eligible children under Pharmacy First:

  • Mild cases: Self-care advice and appropriate pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen
  • Moderate cases: A delayed prescription in case symptoms do not improve within 3 days
  • Severe cases: Immediate antibiotic prescription if clinically indicated

When to Seek Emergency Care

Take your child to A&E or call 999 if they have a sudden loss of hearing, severe dizziness, a stiff neck, or a swelling behind the ear. Our pharmacist can advise if you’re unsure.
