UTI Advice and Treatment in Basildon, Essex

A urinary tract infection is painful, disruptive, and usually needs prompt treatment. At Whitmore Pharmacy, our qualified pharmacists can assess your symptoms and provide antibiotic treatment under the NHS Pharmacy First scheme without you needing to see a GP.

This service is available for women aged 16 to 64 with symptoms of an uncomplicated UTI.

What is a UTI?

A UTI is a bacterial infection of the urinary tract, which includes the bladder (cystitis), urethra (urethritis), and kidneys. Most UTIs are straightforward and respond well to a short course of antibiotics.

  • Needing to urinate more frequently than usual
  • Needing to urinate urgently or suddenly
  • Getting up at night more often to urinate
  • Blood in the urine
  • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
  • Pain in the lower abdomen or back
  • Feeling feverish, shivery, or generally unwell

How We Assess and Treat UTIs

When you visit us, you will have a private consultation with one of our pharmacists. We will:

  • Review your symptoms in detail
  • Check your eligibility for Pharmacy First treatment
  • Carry out a dipstick urine test if appropriate
  • Provide a 3-day course of antibiotics (such as Nitrofurantoin) if clinically indicated
  • Notify your GP of any treatment given

When to Go to A&E Instead

The NHS Pharmacy First UTI service is currently for women aged 16 to 64 only. Men with UTI symptoms should see a GP, as the causes and treatment can differ.

Most uncomplicated UTIs respond to a 3-day antibiotic course. Symptoms usually improve within 24 to 48 hours of starting treatment.

If symptoms persist after completing the course, visit your GP. Do not take a second course of antibiotics without medical advice.
