Sore Throat Treatment in Basildon, Essex

Most sore throats clear up on their own, but some particularly those caused by Group A Streptococcus (strep throat) benefit from antibiotic treatment. At Whitmore Pharmacy in Basildon, our pharmacists can assess your sore throat under the NHS Pharmacy First scheme and provide treatment where clinically appropriate.

What Causes a Sore Throat?

Sore throats are usually caused by a viral infection (like the common cold), which means antibiotics are not effective and are not recommended. However, bacterial infections like strep throat do respond to antibiotics. We use a validated clinical tool called the FeverPAIN score to assess whether antibiotics are likely to help.

Symptoms of a Sore Throat

  • Pain or scratchiness in the throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • White patches or pus on the tonsils
  • Fever above 38 degrees Celsius
  • Headache
  • No cough (a cough usually suggests a viral cause)

How We Assess Your Sore Throat

Our pharmacist will use the FeverPAIN scoring system to assess whether your sore throat is likely to be bacterial. Based on your score and symptoms, we will:

  • Offer self-care advice and OTC pain relief for mild cases
  • Provide a delayed prescription (to use if symptoms worsen) for moderate cases
  • Prescribe antibiotics immediately if your FeverPAIN score is high

Self-Care Tips for a Sore Throat

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Use paracetamol or ibuprofen to manage pain and fever
  • Try medicated lozenges or throat sprays
  • Gargle with warm salty water
  • Get plenty of rest
