What Causes Earache?
Earache in children is most commonly caused by a middle ear infection (otitis media). It can also be caused by:
- Outer ear infections (swimmer’s ear)
- Earwax build-up
- A foreign object in the ear
- Throat infections that refer pain to the ear
- Dental pain
Symptoms to Watch For
- Pain in one or both ears
- Tugging or pulling at the ear (in young children)
- Difficulty hearing or muffled hearing
- Discharge from the ear
- Fever
- Irritability or crying in young children
- Balance problems
How We Treat Earache at Whitmore Pharmacy
Our pharmacist will assess the severity and likely cause of the earache. For eligible children under Pharmacy First:
- Mild cases: Self-care advice and appropriate pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen
- Moderate cases: A delayed prescription in case symptoms do not improve within 3 days
- Severe cases: Immediate antibiotic prescription if clinically indicated
When to Seek Emergency Care
Take your child to A&E or call 999 if they have a sudden loss of hearing, severe dizziness, a stiff neck, or a swelling behind the ear. Our pharmacist can advise if you’re unsure.
