Flu Vaccination in Basildon, Essex

Flu is more serious than most people think. Every year it puts thousands of people in hospital and can be life-threatening for vulnerable groups. At Whitmore Pharmacy in Basildon, we offer both NHS and private flu vaccinations quick, convenient, and administered by qualified pharmacists.

Who is Eligible for a Free NHS Flu Jab?

The NHS offers a free flu vaccine to:

  • Adults aged 65 and over
  • Pregnant women
  • People with certain long-term health conditions (asthma, diabetes, heart disease, etc.)
  • Carers of elderly or disabled people
  • Children aged 2 to 17 (via school or GP)

Private Flu Vaccination

If you are not eligible for a free NHS flu jab, you can still get vaccinated privately at Whitmore Pharmacy. No appointment needed for our walk-in private flu jab service.

Why Get the Flu Jab Every Year?

  • The flu virus changes every year — last year’s vaccine may not protect you this year
  • It protects you and the people around you, including those who cannot be vaccinated
  • It reduces your risk of serious illness, hospitalisation, and complications like pneumonia
  • For people with long-term conditions, flu can trigger dangerous exacerbations

How the Vaccination Works

The flu vaccine is given as a small injection into the upper arm. The whole process takes around 10 minutes. Most people experience no side effects beyond mild arm soreness for a day or two.

Flu vs Cold — Know the Difference

  • Flu comes on suddenly with fever, muscle aches, exhaustion, and headache
  • Colds come on gradually with a runny nose, sore throat, and mild tiredness
  • Flu feels significantly worse and typically keeps you off work for a week or more

If you have a minor cold without a fever, it is generally fine to go ahead. If you have a high temperature, wait until you have recovered before getting vaccinated.

No. The flu vaccine does not contain live virus and cannot cause flu. Any mild symptoms after vaccination  such as a sore arm or slight tiredness are your immune system responding to the vaccine, not the virus.

Autumn ideally October or November before flu season peaks in winter. We start offering flu jabs from September each year.
