Blood Pressure Monitoring at Whitmore Pharmacy, Basildon

High blood pressure (hypertension) is often called the ‘silent killer’ because it usually has no symptoms until serious damage has already been done. At Whitmore Pharmacy in Basildon, we offer free blood pressure checks no appointment needed, no GP visit required.

Why Blood Pressure Monitoring Matters

Around one in three adults in the UK has high blood pressure, but many don’t know it. Uncontrolled hypertension is the leading risk factor for stroke and a major contributor to heart attack, heart failure, and kidney disease. Regular checks are the only reliable way to catch it early.

What Happens During a Blood Pressure Check?

Our pharmacist or pharmacy technician will place a cuff on your upper arm and take a reading. It takes just a few minutes. We will explain your result immediately:

  • Normal: Below 120/80 mmHg
  • Elevated: 120-129/less than 80 mmHg
  • Stage 1 hypertension: 130-139/80-89 mmHg
  • Stage 2 hypertension: 140 or higher / 90 or higher mmHg
  • Hypertensive crisis: Over 180/120 mmHg requires immediate medical attention

What Happens if My Reading is High?

Our pharmacist will advise on next steps based on your reading and overall health profile. This may include lifestyle advice, a referral to your GP, or a recommendation to monitor your blood pressure over several days before deciding on further action.

Tips for an Accurate Reading

  • Sit quietly for 5 minutes before the test
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and vigorous exercise for at least 30 minutes before
  • Empty your bladder beforehand
  • Keep your arm at heart level during the reading

Lifestyle Advice for Blood Pressure Control

  • Reduce your salt intake to less than 6g per day
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruit, vegetables, and wholegrains
  • Limit alcohol to 14 units per week
  • Exercise regularly — aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Quit smoking
